There are many flavors of Linux available today. The primary differences lie in ease/type of installation, default kernel options, default desktop environment(e.g. GNOME or KDE), available support and various performance enhancements.

Most distributions will allow you to download free ISO (CDROM) images that you can use to burn your own copy of Linux. If you have a CD-Writer and high-speed Internet access, this is a good way to go. If you don't have either or both of these, we suggest you purchase a CDROM set. In some cases, CDROM sets can be purchased for just a few dollars (the cost of the media alone).
